HandsOn Battle Creek celebrates many National Days of Service, as well as some other great local days where volunteers can give back through service. Learn more about you can become involved in giving back through National Days of Service and some of our local festivals. National Make a Difference DayHandsOn Battle Creek, Kingman Museum, and Leila Arboretum Society partner together for “Make a Difference at Spooky Science Saturday” held in October. This event started out as a combination of HandsOn Battle Creek’s annual “Make a Difference Day” with Kingman Museum’s annual “Spooky Science Saturday.” Past years have featured hay rides, spooky science experiments, and FREE activities in Leila Arboretum’s Children’s Garden. Every year, volunteers lend a hand prior to and throughout the day of the event to assist with a variety of tasks ranging from decorating, stuffing goody bags, greeting guests at the Planetarium, and more. This is a great opportunity for groups, organizations, families, and individuals to become involved! HandsOn Battle Creek, in honor of National Make a Difference Day, collects donations for a local non-profit. The community is encouraged to donate as during the event and help to make a difference in the Battle Creek area. National Family Volunteer DayHandsOn Battle Creek invites the community to join in the activities of National Family Volunteer Day, held in November. During this event, families in the Battle Creek area are encouraged to join together in addressing real community needs that extend beyond culture, race and economic boundaries. Every year, local nonprofit organizations host volunteer projects in which families can become involved. HandsOn Battle Creek defines “family” broadly. Family volunteering can include a mom and dad with their children, grandparents with grandchildren, “families” of friends, neighbors, classmates or co-workers. Don’t miss your chance to volunteer as an incredible family! Martin Luther King Jr. DayDr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said “Life’s most urgent and persistent question is: what are you doing for others?” Every year Americans will answer that question by joining with their neighbors to serve their communities to make the King Holiday ‘a day on, not a day off,’ and to make an ongoing commitment to serve throughout the year. The King Day of Service empowers individuals, strengthens communities, bridges barriers, addresses social problems, and moves us closer to realizing Dr. King’s dream. “The holiday is a time to remember and act on Dr. King’s commitment to making our nation better,” said Morgan Johnson of HandsOn Battle Creek. “Dr. King exemplified civil rights, civic responsibility, and uniting people of all backgrounds to act on community concerns. There is no better or more meaningful way to honor his legacy than by serving others.” United Way’s Days of CaringDays of Caring is a great opportunity to showcase your organization and the great work that you do in our community. Volunteers come from corporations and businesses in the local area and usually volunteer between 2-3 hours at the host agency. Local FestivalsHandsOn Battle Creek collaborates with other agencies to create successful community events and festivals. Some of these events could not happen without the volunteer support from this community. Below are a few of the different festivals that are supported through HandsOn Battle Creek and our generous volunteers: Cereal Festival/World’s Longest Breakfast Table (June)
International Summerfest (August)
International Festival of Lights (November – December) |
